The two cities of Basel and Bern are championing Switzerland’s circular transition. Through the Circular Cities Switzerland project, Circle Economy and ecos, guided each city through a Circle City Scan, to identify practical strategies that are best positioned to support the circular economy in each city. The project has been supported by the MAVA Foundation and involves ongoing work in more Swiss cities, such as Lausanne, which will be showcased in the coming months.
The projects have worked towards systematically preparing the ground for Swiss cities to implement compelling and internationally viable circular economy projects. These projects aim to create a strong narrative for cities to engage in the circular economy, by demonstrating economic and commercial feasibility, as well as clear social and environmental benefits.
The collaborative Circle City Scan process has highlighted the potential to promote circularity in both cities, such as developing a digital marketplace for secondary construction materials to boost local value creation through material cycling, promoting circular lifestyles through a circular shopping centre in Bern, as well as reducing plastic waste through reusable food container scheme, among other initiatives.
