Plastic free cotton buds - The case of Italy

The stick of cotton buds is normaly made of plastic... however they are some brands thar are usig alternative materials:
- paper stalks instead of plastic (https://www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/simply-gentle/simply-gentle-…)
- 100% Biodegradable or compostable cotton buds

Italy is the first European country to ban plastic stick cotton buds, as it is the 9% of the waste found on Italian beaches. From 1 january 2019 it is forbidden to produce and sell them. Currently They are working on finding different materials to replace the problematic plastic.

Italy has also allocated €250,000 to improve the packaging and marketing of the buds. Manufacturers are required to provide clear information on the proper disposal of the items. Failure to meet criteria could cost the producers fines up to €25,000 and a suspension of production.
